Religious Education
The aim of R.E. is to develop and understanding of the influence of beliefs, values and traditions on individuals and the community, and to give the opportunity for students to reflect on their own beliefs and experiences.
Curriculum
Year 7: Reflect on ideas about God in different religions; Buddhist teachings; creation and the environment; developing world including a visit from a representative of the Leprosy Mission, a Christian organisation; Christian belief and practice including a visit to the local Parish Church and a discussion about Christianity with the local Vicar; Hindu belief and practice; Christian vocation including the work of Monks and a visit to Bede's World, Jarrow.
Year 8: Life and Teachings of Jesus; Sikh belief and practice including a visit from a practising Sikh, Roop Singh; Rites of Passage including birth and coming of age customs in various religions; Aboriginal belief and ceremonies.
Year 9: Hindu worship; Jewish belief and practice including a visit to a Hindu Temple and Jewish Orthodox Synagogue; Moral issues and values including crime and punishment, prejudice and discrimination including the holocaust.
Year 10: Human Rights issues.
