History is recognised by many people as an academic subject which provides an excellent basis for a wide variety of post 16 courses, not necessarily historically based, for example: the armed forces, banking or medicine. As so much of the future is based on past events, studying History can provide an awareness of what is happening in the world which students are entering and they are then able to make some sense of events as they happen. GCSE History attempts to get students to think, question and examine the past through historical investigation. Skills are taught to the individual student, such as investigation methods, selectivity, observation, detection of bias, understanding of detail, as well as concepts like democracy and dictatorship. We hope to acquire these skills through studying a variety of sources, both primary and secondary, using documentaries, newsreels, videos, newspapers, cartoons, memoirs and films like Schlinders List, Good Morning Vietnam, as well as textbooks and the occasional visit to places of interest. Year 10 and 11 students may also get the opportunity to visit Berlin, offering the chance to learn first-hand about German history which links closely with the topics studied for Paper II of the GCSE. Skills that are developed during the two years of the course will be applicable to the student when they leave school and should be useful to them in all aspects of life. Therefore, choosing History as an option can open the door to a number of disciplines, not just teaching or museum work, because History is regarded as an academic subject. Therefore, many career choices actively welcome students who have followed the History course. The Modern World of History course that has been chosen comes right up to the end of the Cold War and the Vietnam War and consists of three separate topics, though each of them interlink: The AQA GCSE qualification consists of three parts: Paper I: Conflict in the Modern World 1919 to 1963 Causes of World War II, Britain in the Second World War and the Nuclear Arms Race. Paper II: Governments in Action Germany 1918-1939 (The Rise of Hitler and Fascism) and America 1919-1941 (The Roaring Twenties, Gangsters, Al Capone, Prohibition and the Ku Klux Klan) Coursework: Vietnam post 1939 (The struggle for independence, Ho Chi Minh, the fight against Communism, the Vietnam War, chemical warfare, etc.) The Changing Role and Status of Women in Britain since 1900 This counts for 25% of the final mark How will students be organised? History classes are mixed ability and will remain so, achieving differentiation by outcome. There is no tiering in History there will be one common exam paper.
