Graphic products are very important to us in our everyday lives, from our earliest days in childhood we are exposed to, and influenced by, them. Graphic Products are the things which enable us to communicate information about things like: what’s going on in the world how to do and use things how to find our way around make information more accessible to us e.g. road maps, telephone directories, bar charts impose information on us by influencing our thinking (possibly subconsciously) e.g. advertising to persuade us to buy a particular product help us to communicate our feelings and identity to others e.g. by wearing a certain T-shirt warn us of potential dangers e.g. safety signs, road signs appeal to our emotions e.g. anti-vivisection posters help us to lead a more responsible life by increasing our awareness e.g. charity posters. Products such as books, newspaper and magazines, advertisements, music CD’s, film DVD, and computer game inlays, packaging and shop signs are just a few examples of graphic products. Students will be engaged in: Product Design - looking at the styling of products Corporate Identity – corporate identities may be seen in many forms, including signs, symbols and brand marking on many kinds of products. When graphics are used to persuade, or inform the purchasing decisions that people make, they are known as promotional graphics Promotional Products - the packaging of everyday consumables. Packaging also provides opportunities to communicate, persuade, drop hints and make suggestions that can influence purchasing decisions. Concept and Environmental design projects - designing shop fronts, exhibitions and theatre design. Scheme of assessment Coursework: 60% The coursework will involve students in designing and making a usable and useful graphics product with its design folder. The product should communicate a concept to a potential client using a range of graphical and I.C.T. skills from simple sketches to 3D models and the use of CAD CAM. Terminal Examination: 40% This will be a written paper (2hrs): Two tiers: Higher (grades available): A* to D Foundation (grades available): C to G A preparation sheet will be issued in March of the year of the examination.
