All students will follow a course in English, and will study for English Literature. Although the two subjects will be assessed separately, resulting in the possibility of GCSE qualifications in two different subjects, there is a mutually enhancing overlap in teaching and learning. English The AQA English syllabus is derived from the National Criteria for English, which students have been taught from Year 7. They will be given a range of opportunities, and will be expected to develop as competent and confident speakers and listeners through discussion, debate, drama and role-play in a variety of situations for a variety of purposes. The oral component is worth 20% of the overall grade in English, and students will be expected to contribute to the varied speaking and listening activities in lessons. The reading element is significant, and will include a range of literary texts poetry, plays, short stories (including Shakespeare, pre-20th century texts, and literature from other cultures and traditions). They also need to be prepared to read a variety of non-literary and media texts such as biographies, travel books, letters, newspapers, magazines and advertisements. The range of writing will include narrative, discursive, descriptive and analytical response to reading. Students will be required to demonstrate awareness of audience and purpose. Students will compile a coursework folder, consisting of 5 assignments, and will study for a terminal exam, which consists of 60% of the marks. English Literature The AQA Literature course gives students the opportunity to develop their ability to read, understand, enjoy and respond to all types of literary texts; to appreciate the ways in which authors achieve their effects; and develop information retrieval strategies for the purpose of literary study. There will be close study of a range of different texts, again to include a play by Shakespeare, and a significant proportion of the texts studied will be poetry, and pre-20th century texts. The majority of the texts required for the study will be contained in an anthology, supplied to students at the beginning of the course. It is the responsibility of the student to look after this anthology for the two year period of the course. As in English, students will compile a coursework folder of extended pieces of work, which can include work on plot, character, style and analysis. There is much to be covered in this two year period. The course will demand a high level of commitment from students in written work, oral participation and in meeting deadlines. It is our hope that students will gain a great deal from these courses, and so we expect students to have commitment. We hope they will understand and enjoy the work of many different writers, and we will be interested to see whether students agree or disagree with their views. We look forward to reading their own writing on many different topics, and to hearing them contribute in many different ways to all the varied activities within the lessons.
