They are also based on the principle that the school is a place of learning, where appearance and behaviour need to be appropriate to the working environment. Your role is to learn, to assist others to learn, and to help maintain a peaceful and safe environment for everyone. Note that this is not a complete list of everything you should or should not do; many of our rules and expectations are simply those of society in general and are obvious and should be understood by all. General behaviour to Staff: You are expected to obey all members of staff what ever their role in the school, in lessons and outside of them. You must speak politely, and not answer back if told off or asked to do something General behaviour to students: You must not act aggressively or cruelly with any student at any time. Any fighting or violence will not be tolerated and will be followed by a serious sanction. You must not speak in an abusive, violent or cruel way to any student, including name calling, and must not answer back if you are called a name. Report incidents to a member of staff. If someone is aggressive or violent to you, you must only use enough force in self-defence to be able to get away and report them. Do not use excessive violence yourself. Work: Make it easy for the teacher to teach and everyone to learn. Be obedient and co-operative with your teachers. Adhere to the basic rule of one person speaks at a time, so that proper listening can take place. Never laugh at or demean the contributions of others in the class. Speak respectfully to all teachers and other adults who work in the school. Listen and speak politely and do not answer back. Sit where the teacher wants you to sit without argument. Have mobile phones switched off, out of reach and out of sight at all times so that the lesson is not interrupted. Have the necessary equipment, including homework, ready at the beginning of every lesson. You should not need to go to the toilet in lessons. Use your breaks and the allocated times for this. Ask only if there is an emergency, ask for a yellow card, and sign out before leaving the classroom. Record homework properly in your diary. Have your diary ready, to save time. Do homework and hand it in on time. Put things away in the room and arrange furniture properly before the end of lesson. Leave in an orderly fashion when you are told and do not rush out. Use break and lunchtime to get water, and NOT just before or during lessons. Appearance and Possessions: Full school uniform should be worn as described in the school prospectus. Trainers can only be worn at break and lunchtime for activities outside the school building. The P.E. Department expect students to change into appropriate footwear in the changing rooms, not before. Outdoor wear such as jackets and caps should also only be worn outside. This includes any sweatshirt or top that is not the Huntcliff regulation design. These are considered to be outside wear only and must be kept in your in your locker at all other times If you have to wear jewellery, it must be only the minimum, as described in the school prospectus. Only ear studs are allowed, and no other visible piercings. Remember that necklaces and bracelets are not allowed and such items can be confiscated. Chewing gum is also not allowed dont bring it in, and certainly dont be chewing in school. You should NOT bring in any particularly expensive, large or unnecessary items which could be stolen or lost, e.g. skateboards. Only bring in what is needed for lessons. You NEVER bring in any weapon, or possible weapon, including replica guns no matter how harmless they seem. Breaking this rule would automatically involve the Police. Listening devices, personal stereos, MP3 players, ear phones are NOT ALLOWED on the school site. These will be confiscated by members of staff. The ONLY exception to this is during the GCSE ART EXAM. Keep any valuables safe at all times, for example by handing them in at the beginning of P.E. lessons Mobile phones can be brought into school BUT MUST NOT BE SEEN OR USED AT ANY TIME UNLESS A MEMBER OF STAFF HAS GIVEN PERMISSION WHEN IT IS AN EMERGENCY. TAKING ANY PHOTO IN SCHOOL OR ON THE SITE IS BANNED. Again, these will be confiscated if they are used without permission. AROUND SCHOOL You should: Walk on the left inside the building in SINGLE FILE. Never run inside the building Wait if there is a crowd of people trying to move along, and do not push your way through. Leave classrooms in an orderly fashion. Do not use the front door of the school unless a fire alarm sounds or you are permitted to go home for lunch. Use one of the 4 permitted entrances at the start and end of the day Knock quietly on the staffroom door if you need to talk to a member of staff. Form sensible queues where necessary in single lines or in twos, as instructed. At break and lunchtime: Behave sensibly and safely at all times, showing respect for other people. Do NOT get involved in any form of playfighting as it often leads to real violence. Go outside as soon as possible. Do not stay in any classroom without the presence of a member of staff. Choose whether you are going outside or staying inside in the designated areas do not keep moving between the two. Remain on the site unless you are have a pass showing you are allowed to go home for lunch, or have signed out with permission. Stay reasonably near the school building and DO NOT GO into any area that is out of bounds: i.e. the furthest edges of the site, into the trees or near the gate Go to the designated area for your year group when there is a wet break or lunchtime, and remain there. Do not walk around inside the school eating or drinking. Go to the proper areas. Keep your possessions safe by using your locker, keeping them with you or putting them in a safe place at breaks or lunchtimes. At registration times you must: Put your coat in your locker on your way to your form room Arrive on time (ie in your form room before the second bell) remain in the room until dismissed. Be seated on chairs for registration periods, in the morning and the afternoons. Participate appropriately in tutor time activities. Bring a signed note to explain any absence. Put letters for parents in a safe place and hand them to parents when you get home. Be prepared with your homework diary so that tutors can regularly sign it and check it is being filled in. Understand that being late 3 times will result in your tutor giving you a breaktime detention. Leave your tutor room only after the correct bell has gone Bring a padlock for your locker, keep it tidy and clean, and empty it completely at the end of every year.
