The Local Area

Huntcliff School is built at Saltburn-by-the-Sea in an area of outstanding natural beauty with a beautiful coastline and interesting countryside and woodland. The area also has a rich historical heritage, and this section of the website explores this in more detail.

Historical Overview

Saltburn is mainly associated with the Victorians, with the whole of Victorian Saltburn designated as a conservation area in the 1970s. Look at the timeline for more information. Other periods of Saltburn's History are equally fascinating, from smuggling days to Second World War bombs. Why not have a go at our quiz to see how much you already know about Saltburn's history? It was compiled from questions produced by the following Year 8 students - Chloe & Natalie, Steven, Chelsea & Sam, Joanne & Gemma, Shane & James, Emma, Tom & Antony, Joe, Wesley & Adam.

Local History at Huntcliff School

Students at Huntcliff study local (Victorian) history during Year 8, but local history is also related to other topics e.g. the Second World War. Students have lent their enthusiastic support to community History Projects. The Cliff Lift Project, completed in conjunction with Saltburn Forward, involved Year 8 students in redesigning the area at the top of the Cliff Lifts. Year 9 student work was recently displayed as part of an exhibition commemorating the end of the Second World War, and the 90th anniversary of the founding of the Women's Institute.

Acknowledgements

Huntcliff School History Department would particularly like to thank Tony and Cathy Lynn (local historians) for the way in which they have inspired students and staff with an interest in Local History, and generously shared their knowledge with us (e.g. giving a slide show to Year 8 on the History of Saltburn). We'd also like to thank 'Miss Betty' for helping us with all her local knowledge.

Thanks also to the students who took the photos as part of activities linked to Local History Research.

Can You Help?

We would love to hear from anyone who can give us additional information about Saltburn, whether it be personal memories, facts about particular buildings, or information we can scan in. Our aim in developing this website is to provide a community resource that everybody can enjoy - the more information which is contributed the more useful it will be.
