Water levels in the Swift Reservoir, south of the mountain, are intentionally lowered by 8m as a precaution against floodwaters from snowmelt if an eruptions occur. 29 March: A second crater appears. 30 March: Many Small eruptions of steam and ash. 3 April: A bulge begins to grow on the north flank of the volcano. It eventually ends up protruding 100m. 29 April: The new summit craters join to form one large crater, 500m across. 30 April: A 30km radius danger zone is put around the mountain to keep sightseers away. 10 May: Several earthquakes of at least 4.0 on the Richter scale occur; the bulge on the northern flank grows by 1.5m a day now. 18 May: An earthquake (5.0 on Richter scale) caused bulge to move forward and downward. Material released from the bulge forms a landslide of rock, glacier ice and soil (Lahar). This races downhill and floods the lake and valley with sediment blocking the port of Portland on the Columbia River. Exposed magma explodes sideways sending out blast waves of volcanic gas, steam and dust (which moves northwards for 25km). Within this range every form of life – vegetation and animal – was destroyed. A series of eruptions eject gas, ash and pyroclastic bombs. Thick ash rose in a giant mushroom 24km high into the sky with up to 15cm of ash falling on the surrounding area. Three days later: The volcanic ‘plume’ (cloud) of fine ash reached the east coast of the USA. Weeks later: The ash completely encircles the world.
