The marks will be awarded as follows: Applied Understanding 6 marks Methodology 6 marks Data Presentation 6 marks Data Interpretation 6 marks Evaluation 6 marks  Total= Length and Composition Dont get hung-up on size! Greater quantity does not automatically bring greater marks, however, you are not going to achieve a good mark with a few pages its simple common sense!!! Presentation The work must be presented on A4 paper in vertical format. Work may be submitted in polythene pockets (two sides per pocket) and must be in a ring binder. Students name and form must be clearly marked on the spine and front cover. Written work must be word-processed and graphical displays produced using ICT skills. Coursework Criteria   You must present your work as follows: FRONT COVER CONTENTS TITLE PAGE INTRODUCTION THEORY METHODOLOGY DATA INTERPRETATION CONCLUSION EVALUATION BIBLIOGRAPHY REFERENCES The following information outlines how to tackle these sections correctly: Front Cover (1 Side) This should include: Your Name Hypothesis Picture Contents (1 Side) This should list each section with the page number. Bibliorgephy (1 Side) This will eventually go at the back of your project but is where you should keep a list of all the sources of information you have used e.g. websites/books/magazines/newspapers Section 1 - Title Page (1 Side) This must clearly state the nature of the study in the form of a hypothesis. You will have the choice of the following titles: Parking problems in Saltburn-by-the-sea have a negative impact on local businesses? Tourism brings more negatives than positives to Saltburn-by-the-sea. The regeneration of Redcar town centre. Does it go far enough? The Tees Barrage is much more than a flood defence scheme? Whitby is a Honey Pot Site, is tourism here sustainable? (Through consultation with your teacher you could come up with your own title/hypothesis) You will breakdown the title into sections that you will investigate here. It is here that the examiners are looking for evidence of a well planned, and well organised investigation. For example Here, you must also justify your choice of hypothesis. Why are you investigating this? What is your interest? What is your connection to the hypothesis? This need only be one simple sentence! Section 2 Introduction (1-2 Sides) 1. First of all you must locate the study area e.g. Saltburn is a small seaside resort on the North-East coast of Englandetc. 2. Next you must introduce the place/area you are studying by providing background information and description that would help a reader visualise your study area. 3. Next you must include two maps to help locate the study area. Firstly a map locating your study area on a UK map. Secondly a detailed map of the local area you are studying. A base map with an inset map is the best way of doing this. Remember your maps must include: Title Labels Scale Grid references North arrow Key Figure number It is important to use your map(s) well. Make sure that they are relevant to your study and are not just there for the sake of it. You must use them and refer to them perhaps through labelling and annotation. Dont simply print it straight off the internet and include it in your study. Make it your own! Section 3 Theory (1-2 Sides) What is the theory or theories that will underpin your investigation? In other words where does it fit into the Geography GCSE Syllabus that you are studying! You should then apply this geographical terminology when you are interpreting your data! YOU MUST At least include a list of KEY WORDS here. Try and include about 20 or so. These are words that are central to your enquiry and related to the syllabus. For example if you are looking at tourism some of your key words would be: Honey Pot Site National Park Soil Erosion Sustainable Conflict Traffic Congestion Pollution Facilities Planning Eco tourism Zoning Park and Ride etc. YOU SHOULD Give definitions of these key words! YOU COULD Include any theories or models here that you will be relating or comparing your data to. For example if you are doing a study of Middlesbrough town centre you may want to consider Burgess and Hoyts Urban Land use Models or a Hierarchy of needs Model. You could also insert other examples that you know of. For example if you investigating the regeneration of Tees Barrage you could site the example of the London Docklands and its successes! You MUST constantly refer back to your theory when your are interpreting to make sure you dont lose sight of what you are investigating. You should be: EXPLAINING not DESCRIBING Section 4 Methodology (1-2 Sides) This is a very important section and will be central to your study. But what techniques should you use? Well there are many ways to collect data. But choose the ones that will suit your study best. There are several things that should be included in your methodology: 1. JUSTIFY YOUR METHODS To access the high marks you MUST justify why you chose each methods e.g. I will be using a questionnaire to complete my study. This will consist of 15 questions and will include both open and closed questions. I intend to ask my questionnaire at 6 different locations. I chose a questionnaire as it allows me to gather a large amount of quantifiable data in a short period of time at several different locations. I used both open and closed questions to gather a range of responses and a variety of different data sets. For example, I also asked some very open questions (qualitative) as I wanted to know peoples opinions. What were you hoping to find out? Why those particular questions? This is very important dont just simply do one for the sake of doing it! If there are 4 sections to your hypothesis, the sensible thing would be to have 5 questions for each section in a 20 question questionnaire. Closed questions enable you to transform the data into graphs much easier than open questions. For example: Do you agree or disagree? You have to clearly point this out for the examiner. Examples may include the use of a painting, sketching, narrative, poem or clever use of overlays or your own title. Section 5 - Data Interpretation and enquiry (Several Sides per Section) Once you data has been sorted and processed, it must be displayed in some way. The data interpretation is the main part of your study! This part of your investigation should be divided into sections which examine your hypothesis. These sections should have been described in the breakdown of your hypothesis in the introduction. When you are presenting your data there are many things to consider: Try to use at least 10 different forms of data presentation during you investigation. What level you reach depends very much upon the level of skills used. You must use at least 4 complex techniques (level 3) as well as a wide range of presentation techniques to achieve 6 marks in the data presentation section. So what is a complex technique? A simple pie chart or bar graph is seen as a level 1 skill. However, expand upon this and you are able to achieve a higher range in your marks. Your interpretation MUST BE LINKED TO YOUR THEORY. You should STATE THE OBVIOUS You should QUOTE FIGURES (numbers/proportions/ratios/percentages) REMEMBER! You are trying to prove or disprove your hypothesis Section 6 Conclusion (2 Sides) You need to introduce your conclusion with a short paragraph that restates your hypothesis(es). You must summarise your findings supported by valid evidence and the theories on which it is based. You must use key terminology and show how all the various issues link together. Try writing them out in rough and looking for an order of importance, or a logical sequence so that these key findings make sense when read by someone else. You must ensure that your key words appear in these findings. You must also consider the consequences of your findings? How do your findings relate to the wider world, the bigger picture? Remember your enquiry is only a small study. For example, you may simply be looking at land use on a particular street, but what about land use in the town, district, country? Finally you should be in a position to state whether your original hypothesis(es) was/were correct and why? Try to relate your conclusions to the geographical theories upon which your enquiry was based. Section 7 Evaluation (1-2 Sides) This is an evaluation of your enquiry process not the study itself and is often the section candidates complete very badly (even though it is worth 6 marks!!!). Do not simply congratulate yourself on how clever you have been, aim to be more critical. This is not a wish list, it is looking back at how well your enquiry has gone and to the value of your work. The main aim of this section is to look at the weaknesses in the methods, results and conclusions by suggesting HOW THE ENQUIRY PROCESS CAN BE IMPROVED. Your evaluation should be linked to your methodology where you considered how and where you collected your data. Here the examiners are looking for relevance and justification. Think of your evaluation like the famous Leaning Tower of Pisa. Below is a crude diagram of this tower in three parts. So it goes that the most important and therefore the first thing to discuss is block A Reliability of Methods. Try to find a problem for each method: e.g. I carried out my questionnaire on a rainy day Why might this be an unreliable method? Well it may mean that there were fewer people to ask or it made the environment look less appealing than on a sunny day. Next you would consider how this unreliability affected the accuracy of your results. How accurate are they? How far can you trust them? Did you make any errors when collecting your data that might have affected the quality of your results? Would other people interpret your results in the same way? Would you get the same results if you repeated your study now? Remember your results are only a snapshot in time, a small part of a bigger picture. The accuracy of your results clearly influences how valid your conclusions are so this is the third thing to look at. Can you be certain that other people would come to the same conclusions as you if they looked at your data? Would you come to the same conclusions if you repeated your study in a different location or at a different time? If you cannot be certain that you conclusions would be replicated, how valid are they? So you need to go through this process for each method: Reliability of methods Accuracy of results Validity of conclusions You must then suggest ways that each method may have been improved. e.g. A larger sample size, A different time of day, A day when it was not raining, Age group, Gender, Random or Selected sample (which is fairer).
