In the department, we encourage students to explore and appreciate the different cultures in our world and thereby gain a better global understanding and respect for our societys values and attitudes. A journey of a thousand miles starts in front of your feet Lao tzu Twenty years from now, you will be more disappointed by the things you didnt do, than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbour. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore, dream, discover. Mark Twain What skills will I learn? __________________________________ The content of geography changes all the time, but the skills of the subject will last you a life-time. At GCSE we will train you in the skills of geographical research, information handling and the presentation and use of what you have discovered. ICT (Information and Communication Technology) will play an important part in your studies. The Internet, CD ROMS and e-mail enable us to find out so much about our world and with such immediacy. Who will I meet?________________________________________ You will have the opportunity to travel in your studies and visit one or more European countries. Locally we hope you will be able to join other study tours and excursions in the UK, for example the Lake District. This fieldwork gives you greater understanding of physical and human Geography upon which to develop your individual study. What sort of student takes Geography? You should be curious about our world, questions such as wheres that? and why is that like it is?, should be interesting to you. Your dont need to be great with maps, we will teach you that, but you should like learning about other places, peoples and cultures. An interest in environmental, conservation and sustainability issues with a willingness to look at both sides of the debate is important. It also helps if you are good at maths and science, art and language skills. You will be expected to be able to use ICT reasonably well. Above all else you must be committed to hard work and to being organised in your studies. The Geography projects produced by our school are recognised as amongst the best in the region. The Geography syllabus includes: Paper 1 - People and the Natural Environment Tectonic Activity - composition of the earths crust, its instability and resulting hazards Rocks and Landscapes - rock types, erosion, weathering and land form changes Glacial Landscapes - glacial erosion, deposition and resulting land forms (Note: this paper also includes a mapwork section) Paper 2 - People and the Human Environment Population - study of local and global population issues Industry - manufacturing, the economy and the environment Development - Different viewpoints about the balance of trade and inequalities in the world These subjects will be familiar to you from your studies in lower school. Each study topic uses different areas of Britain and the World to provide study material so that as you work through topics you gain both a local and international understanding. Quite often topics will cover events that are currently in the news or of concern to people so that your knowledge is as up to date as possible. We will also train you in the study and research skills needed to keep this knowledge up to date. 25% of your marks will come from an individual study (coursework). You will need to carry out first hand research for this study, this means you have to go out and collect the information yourself. You will need to be well organised as you will develop your individual study over many months. However, here you will learn skills that you will take with you for the rest of your life. The Geography department is well equipped to meet your needs during the course. We have two specialist teaching rooms, a wide range of modern textbooks and videos and other teaching resources. The department embraces ICT through the use of the department website, CD-ROMs, e-mail, Internet and has good access to computing facilities including an interactive whiteboard and LCD projectors in each room. CAREERS - Where will it take me?___________________________ Next year as you start looking at a future career you may begin to realise how many jobs require you to have good geographical skills.
