so what level am I working at...?  

In years 7, 8 and 9 you will on be given a level mark on your coursework and for the last question in each module test. Below is a brief description of each level and what a students must do to meet them. Their aim is to continue to make progress and move up the level:

Average attainment should be as follows:

Year 7 - 4/5

Year 8 - 5

Year 9 - 5/6

 

Level 4

You can recognise and describe patterns you see in geography

You can describe physical and human processes

You understand about people’s lives and how where they live affects what they do and how they live

You start to ask geographical questions and start to investigate them

You use the right key words in your answers

Level 5

You can now explain (give reasons for) the patterns you see in both physical and human geography

You can describe how and why people’s lives in different places can be the same or different, depending on the environment

You recognise how places are linked

You recognise that people’s actions can change the environment and offer reasons for this

You can give your own opinions

You use the correct skills to investigate questions and places

You suggest conclusions and can use graphs and writing to do this

Level 6

You can describe and explain a range of physical and human processes

You recognise that these processes link together to give different places their own special characteristics

You recognise that places are linked and depend on each other

You recognise that different environments have to be managed (looked after) in different ways

You understand that different values and attitudes, including your own, affect people and places in different ways

You can choose a range of skills to carry out investigations

You can use the evidence you find to back up your conclusions

Level 7

You can describe how the physical and human processes interact (work together)

You can show how these interactions change places and environments

You understand that people’s values and attitudes influence the decisions made about environments and can explain the changes that happen as a result

You know that people’s actions in one place can affect people’s lives elsewhere

You understand that people’s actions can lead to conflict (argument)

You understand that sustainable development is needed to plan and manage environments and resources

You become more independent, investigating questions and issues on your own using a wide range of skills accurately, and you present well-argued backed-up conclusions

Level 8

You can explain how the characteristics of places change over time, in terms of location, physical and human processes and interactions with other places

You can give reasons for the differences in development in different places

You understand that many complicated factors result in different qualities of life

You recognise the causes and consequences of environmental issues

You understand how sustainable development can affect your own life and can give examples to illustrate this

You can independently come up with geographical questions and issues and can develop your own investigations

You can evaluate sources of evidence before using them

You give full argued summaries/conclusions
